Catawba Falls, McDowell County, NC

 


This little hiking adventure took place last month in May. The scenery was beautiful, but my God, was I humbled. One of the trails you can take to reach the waterfall involves taking a long flight of stairs (according to Google it's 580 steps or 30 stories). I'm by no means a novice hiker. I've been hiking for years now, but that hike was the Trail from Hell. I had to stop many times because my HR was dangerously high (didn't help I had an energy drink maybe an hour before I arrived). Even though I wanted to give up and turn back several times, I made it to the waterfall in the end. Would I ever do it again? Nope.

 One of the boys in this photo saw me shooting with my Polaroid camera and offered me money to take his picture with his friends. I thought he was joking around about paying me but I ended up with $10 at the end of my hike/trip. Not going to lie, I kind of regret accepting the money because looking back on it, certain experiences shouldn't be transactional. It was very sweet of him though.

Red Mountain Park, Birmingham, Alabama

At 1,500 acres, Red Mountain Park is the largest urban park in the United States. Red Mountain was the site of several mines that supplied iron ore to the blast furnaces of Birmingham and surrounding areas (there are remnants of furnaces in Brierfield and Tuscaloosa that are miles outside of the city). The crude iron mining operations contributed heavily to the city's growth and industry during the height of its use. The last ore mine closed in 1971.  Of all the places I've hiked around Alabama, RMP holds a special place inside my heart. I missed this place so badly after moving out of Alabama. I don't go back home to Alabama often, probably once a year at most. New River Gorge Bridge

The West Virginia New River Gorge Bridge is the longest arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere at 3,030 feet long. The bridge was built 876 feet above the New Gorge River and is the third highest bridge in the U.S. The bridge opened in 1977 and the cost of construction was 37 million! Only one man was killed during its three year construction, which is remarkable when you think about it.  Back in November 2023, a friend and I signed up to do the Bridge Walk. We got to walk on the catwalk from beginning to the end and learned more history about the bridge. The New Gorge River Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places back in 2013.  I decided to make the NRGB (for short) it's own series and post because I wound up taking several shots of it.
